Doorways
In 2006 West Glamorgan Doorways Merged with Gwalia Care & Support to become part of the Grŵp Gwalia organisation. Now known just as 'Doorways', the project was originally established as a voluntary organisation by a group of parents and other individuals interested in the future provision of accommodation for people with a learning disability.
Since 1988 Doorways, in partnership with Social Services has:
- Established and maintained a 'Getting-to-Know-You' scheme with a primary aim of preparing people for changes in their lifestyles and accommodation.
- Offered flexible support to individuals with complex needs and provided a range of activities including assessments of compatibility, support needs and future day service requirements.
Doorways is managed by an elected committee drawn from its membership, with representatives from the staff team and Social Services. They meet on a monthly basis and in liaison with the staff, discuss the development of the service, monitor finance, participate in staff selection and organise fund raising activities.
As part of a recent attempt to become a Registered Domiciliary Care Agency and the length of time it would take for Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales registration, it was recognised that Doorways would benefit from management support which could be provided by the Care & Support side of Grŵp Gwalia Cyf.
Doorways is funded by Social Services enabling the organisation to rent an ordinary house in the community which is provided by Gwalia.
Doorways aims to help people do as much as they can for themselves and to develop confidence and independence skills. They also offer advice and assistance to help people look after their own health as well as providing support to attend college and day services.
Doorways Philosophy
Doorways supports wholeheartedly the principles of the 'All Wales Strategy' which states that people with a learning disability have:
- A right to be treated as individuals
- A right to ordinary patterns of life in the community
- A right to individual help from the community in which they live and from professional services in order to develop their maximum potential.
