Habren launches at the University of Glamorgan

Older couple embracingGrŵp Gwalia Cyf and the Faculty of Health, Sport and Science at the University of Glamorgan have come together to form 'Habren', a company aimed at providing improved support facilities for people with dementia that will focus on the development of integrated accommodation for people with dementia and their carers.

The launch will include speeches by Professor Donna Mead, head of the School of Care Sciences at the University of Glamorgan; Randolph Thomas, Chair of Tai Cartrefi and Phil Roberts, Deputy Chief Executive of Grŵp Gwalia Cyf. It will also see the official launch of the new Habren website located at www.habren.co.uk.

The Faculty of Health, Sport and Science at the University of Glamorgan will contribute through the development of improved support for vulnerable people and in the development of therapeutic methods of managing dementia. The training of new staff who are equipped with cutting edge skills and knowledge is also integral to the University's desire to improve education and training in this area.

It is hoped that in the longer term, Habren will help individuals to remain independent for as long as possible whilst recognising the importance of enabling couples to remain together. It will also provide community services to people with dementia who still live in their own homes.

Habren is currently working with Carmarthenshire County Council and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council to develop residential accommodation to meet the needs of local residents.
